Where are you now?

mieyeed

Repressive regimes are often the catalyst for great protest music. Some of the very best "topical" songs live forever and, unfortunately, resonate for later generations. This Land Is Your Land, Blowing In the Wind, We Shall Overcome. But every repressive regime spews up more horrors that some skilled songwriter is able to probe, exposing the evil and providing some hope. As Billy Bragg has said often, music can't change the world. Only people can change the world. But music can inspire, motivate, unify and validate. Needless to say, we could use a good song now. Here's one released 55 years ago that still resonates for me, from the Canadian band, Steppenwolf. Don't you know, we need you now?
