On Thursday January 13, I host an interview with music biographer Brian T. Atkinson who has written books about Townes Van Zandt, Roky Erickson, Mickey Newbury and others. And he's got one out now about Nanci Griffith. Griffith had a stage persona that drew people in to her gentle, poetic side, but like many artists, she suffered for her creativity. The book, Love at the Five and Dime: The Songwriting Legacy of Nanci Griffith is excellent. He's now working on books about Todd Snider and Judee Sill. We talked a bunch but I never got around to telling him what my favorite Nanci song is - I'm Not Drivin' These Wheels (Bring the Prose to the Wheel). When the snow's covering the ground in New England, it reminds me of Nanci's lonely bus ride.
